Govt bans 18 vulgar 18 OTT. See the list here

The Indian government banned 18 OTT platforms, including Uncut Adda, Dreams Films, and Prime Play, for hosting offensive content. These platforms, despite warnings, continued to offer obscene, vulgar, and even pornographic material. The ban extends to 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts linked to these OTT services.

The government cited legal violations as the reason for the ban. These violations include Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B Ministry) elaborated on the banned content. They found a significant portion to be obscene, vulgar, and demeaning to women. It depicted nudity and sexual acts in inappropriate contexts, like teacher-student relationships and incest.

The I&B Ministry further stated that the content included sexual innuendo and, at times, extended scenes of pornography lacking any social or thematic value.

The government highlighted the popularity of these banned apps. One app had over 1 crore (10 million) downloads, while two others had over 50 lakh (5 million) downloads on the Google Play Store. Additionally, the social media accounts of these platforms had a combined following of over 32 lakh (3.2 million) users.
